I think I have finally solved my router problems. This morning I could not connect to the Internet at all and so I unplugged the Ethernet cable from my PC and plugged it into my  laptop and I could connect the laptop to the Internet.  To my amazement when I turned back to my PC, it was connected to the Internet too.  It had connected wirelessly. So I think the problem was that when I had theEthernet cable pluggged into the PC, the router did not know whether to connect via a wired or wireless connection.  I have not replaced the cable and, touch wood, it has been running perfectly all day.
John now has gout in his other foot too – he is going to the Doctor again on Monday.
